Identity has become a key theme in modern popular culture. The NBC
series Heroes is seemingly obsessed with identity, and the recent
Orange adverts abound with references to 'who I am'. However, Western
culture has broadly focused on individual identity, to the detriment
of the huge power of social, political and geographical influences.
Our surnames reflect jobs - Farmer, Smith, Baker. In contrast, Chinese
names largely originate from where we are born. In this context, I am
interested in the way that the places where we live shape and mold are
lives.
I believe short story to be the best medium for investigating the
relationship between an individual and their surroundings. It allows a
snapshot of mood and feeling without being bogged down with laborious
and lengthy descriptions of setting and atmosphere. The following
three stories focus on identity, and the interactive relationship
between personality of an individual, a community, and a city.
Key themes in the stories include Metamorphoses, Identity, City vs
Country, and the Supernatural. In particular, in relation to identity,
I love the association of different animals with different cities -
the Eagle of Rome, Bear of Berlin.

For the show, I am interested in a range of mediums to present the
narrative, rather than laying hard copies of a script out.
Alternatively, the stories could provide ideas for the rest of the
collective, or be the basis of a theme - the Metropolis,
Metamorphoses, etc....
